It has been nine years since the San Francisco 49ers won 10 games. Nine years since they won the NFC West. Nine years since they made the playoffs. And nine years since they won a playoff game.

September always brings hope and optimism to the NFL gridiron. But for a team as decorated and steeped in tradition as the San Francisco 49ers, the bar is always that much higher.

Regardless of the question marks that this year's roster will bring, the Niners seem poised to make this 2011 season the one that returns them to the NFL's elite. Or at least provides the spark that gives the fans an idea that the York family and management know what they are doing.
