NFL Rumors: Chargers’ Mike Tolbert Slated To Start for Injured RB Ryan Mathews
It appears that rookie RB Ryan Mathews was removed from the game in Week 2 for more than just precautionary reasons.
After the coaching staff continually downplayed his ankle injury as a minor issue, Mathews admitted that he has a high ankle sprain and will be very doubtful to play in Week 3.
With Mathews' chances of being game-ready slim to none, backup Mike Tolbert is expected to start in his place. At 5'9" and 243 pounds, Tolbert is viewed more as a fullback by some standards but proved that he's a very capable runner after amassing 82 yards on the ground (16 carries) and two touchdowns filling in for Mathews last week.
