Kentucky Derby Week: The Triple Crown Misses

[It's Derby Week, the lone week that Bacott is authorized by the JSF Board of Directors to write about horse racing on the site. Parts of this column originally appeared in 2008 but it has been updated and sadly is as relevant as ever.]

If the Triple Crown was a movie script, then the Kentucky Derby would serve as the explosive first act. 

The true intent is to introduce the main characters and establish the story-lines in a fashion that hooks the audience. 

If the second act (The Preakness) builds up the storyline then by the time the third act (The Belmont) starts, the drama is at its peak level heading into the big finish.
