Once Pablo Sandoval is healthy, he'll never have to worry about fracturing his hamate bone again—he's had them surgically removed from both hands.  So, that's good news, right?

Repeated microtrauma and fractures often occur to the hamate (from the Latin hamus, which means hook) bone during sports involving swinging clubs, bats and racquets.  Direct trauma often occurs, usually to the nondominant hand, when the butt of the bat rests on the hamate and the force of the swing is transmitted directly to the bone.
