News: San Diego Padres To Extend David Eckstein Through 2010

According to the San Diego Padres Twitter feed, the team is close to extending veteran second baseman David Eckstein through the 2010 season, worth $1 million.

In Eckstein's first season with the Padres he has batted .255 with an on-base percentage of .317 and 38 RBI.

The Padres have been impressed with Eckstein's play with the Padres this season and his ability to mentor the Padres youngsters such as Tony Gwynn Jr., Will Venable, and Everth Cabrera.

The move to extend Eckstein makes perfect sense because the Padres do not have a second baseman that is prepared to play at the major league level yet.
